ELLINWOOD — Crockett A. “Cap” Proffitt, 65, died March 16 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.  Born June 21, 1948 at Sterling, he was the son of Vern Gayle and Jacquelyn Crockett Proffitt.
A resident of Ellinwood since 1989 and formerly of the Alden-Sterling area, he was the manager of Barton County Feeders, Inc.  He graduated from Sterling High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart.  He attended the First Baptist Church, was a member of the American Legion and the Rotary Club of Ellinwood, the Kansas Livestock Association, The National Cattleman’s Beef Association the GTO Association of America, the Greater Wichita GTO Club and was a board member and partner of Ellinwood Country Living.  
On May 15, 2004, he married Robin Greer in rural Sterling.  He is survived by Robin of the home; his son Spencer and Amanda Proffitt, Ellinwood, three daughters: Jennifer and Kent Crawford, Cottonwood Falls, Casey and Alan Pohlman, Ellinwood, and Karlene Jeppesen, Hamilton, Mont.; parents Gayle and Jacquelyn Proffitt, Hutchinson, brother Dan and Toni Proffitt, Hutchinson, two sisters, Teresa and Keith Harmon, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Sherry Zahr and Ryan Culpepper, Wichita; and six grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents.  
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, at St. Josephs Parish Center, Ellinwood, with Pastor Dave Wesner officiating.  Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood, with full Military Honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 20, at United Church of Christ, Ellinwood, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.  Memorials are suggested to the Cap Proffitt Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
