HAYS — Darryl Reynold Apel, 75, Hays, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024 at HaysMed.
He was born Dec. 9, 1948 in Wichita, the son of Anthony and Priscilla (Fisher) Apel. Darryl attended Belpre High School until his senior year, then graduated from Macksville High School with the class of 1967. In 1971, he graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting. He worked as an accountant and bank trust officer, served in the National Guard, and was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. On April 28, 1979, he was united in marriage to Nancy Moxter in Hays, and they celebrated 44 years of marriage. He was an exceptional high school athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He played basketball for Fort Hays State University and enjoyed attending FHSU and other sporting events. Darryl enjoyed staying in touch with his friends, often going to lunch with them, visiting with them, and traveling. He cherished his grandchildren and his family.
Survivors include his wife Nancy of Hays; son, Michael Apel of Overland Park; daughter, Cheryl Robben and husband Josh of Hays; sister, Shelly Piland and husband Don of Macksville; three grandchildren, Tyler, Hailey, and Kelsey Robben; his brother-in-law, Lowell Moxter of Overland Park; sister-in-law, Marlene Moxter of Oberlin; his nephews and nieces, Adam and Blake Piland, Andrea Harvey, and Alissa Sapp; and his great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 on Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. A vigil service and rosary will be at 6 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the FHSU Foundation or to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church.
