YORK, Neb. — David E. Staehr, 73, of York, Neb. and Overland Park, passed away on April 8, in York, Neb. He was born July 14, 1940, to Alfred and Grace (Dey) Staehr of Waco, Neb. David was a 1958 graduate of York High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was recruited to attend Kearney State College in Kearney, Neb., where he competed as a stand out athlete and earned varsity letters in football and basketball with the Lopers. David then started his teaching and coaching career in Cozad, Neb. in 1962. He moved to Great Bend in 1968, where he led both junior high and high school athletic squads until he retired from 32 years of teaching and coaching in 1994. David was married in 1962 to Charlotte (Huston) Staehr and to this union two sons were born. They later divorced and he married Myrna Obermier in York, Neb. on Nov. 11, 2011.
While living in Great Bend, David was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was an elder and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Presidents Prayer Breakfast in Topeka. Presently he was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York, Neb. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed painting houses, gardening, playing softball and golf when he was able.
David is survived by his wife Myrna of York, Neb.; two sons, Lee (Shelley) Staehr of Leawood, and Brett (Julie) Staehr of Wichita; five grandchildren, Erin, Lindsey and Ryan Staehr and Sydney and Grant Staehr; former wife, Charlotte; four brothers; and three sisters. Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
Memorials services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York, Neb. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to York Community Foundation Drive for Your Goal Scholarship, Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa, or the donor’s choice.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.metzmortuary.com.
