Delbert A. Sloan, 89, of Great Bend, died Sept. 9 at his home. He was born Oct. 7, 1920, at Great Bend, the son of L. Chester and Alice M. (Bortz) Sloan. He was a 1938 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married Wilma Marie Witt in 1940 and they later divorced. He then married Betty Nicolet on April 4, 1953, at Great Bend. He managed C & W Machine Shop until 1960, when he engaged in selling oilfield pumping units, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Sloan was a lifetime Great Bend resident and a member of First United Methodist Church, where he sang for many years in the chancel choir; Great Bend Country Club, the Great Bend Petroleum Club, Golden Belt Community Concert Association Board, Great Bend Library Board and Central Kansas Library System Board. He managed women’s fast-pitch softball and Babe Ruth baseball teams and was an avid bowler and golfer. Mr. Sloan was also active with Barton Community College athletics.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Sloan, of the home; one son, Bruce Sloan of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Randy Hayden and wife Tammy, Laura Patzner and husband Brad, Beth Fuel; and Justin T. Sloan; and five great-grandchildren, Brett Hayden, Sara Hayden, Madyson Hayden, Matthew Patzner and Katlyn Fuel. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Dell Marie Hayden and Shirley Sloan Mueller, and one sister, Velma Sloan.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Great Bend, with the Rev.Tom Sheldon officiant. Inurnment, at a later date, will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation, as Mr. Sloan donated his body to the University of Kansas School of Medicine for research. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the First United Methodist Church or to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
