 Donald H. Matthews, 87, died Dec. 31, 2015, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born Dec. 28, 1928, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Harry and Clara (Chambers) Matthews. Don married Mary Louise Powell Jan. 22, 1957, at Great Bend.  She died Nov. 23, 2010.
A longtime Great Bend resident, Don worked for Walnut Creek Milling Co. as an elevator operator.
He served in the Korean Conflict as a PFC in the U.S. Army.  
Don was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, Central Kansas Association for Visually Impaired, and the American Legion Argonne Post 180, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include three daughters, Marcella White of Great Bend, Joyce Espinosa of Chase and Linda Krom of Bonneville, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Matthews; six brothers, Billy Dean Matthews, Walter Matthews, Richard M. Matthews, Marion “Pappy” Matthews, Claude W. Matthews, and Jack Dale Matthews; and by two sisters, Virginia Hopp and Carrie Parsons.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Ken E. Gray, officiant. Interment will be at Eden Valley Cemetery, Seward, with military rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
