YUKON, Okla. — Doris L. Smith, 94, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, in Yukon, Okla.
She was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Whiting, Kan. to Calvin and Gladys (Priest) Wolfe. Doris married Verne Smith on May 21, 1943 in Whiting, Kan. Verne passed before her on March 19, 1999. Doris and Verne were lifetime horse owners and enjoyed sharing the ranch life with their sons Steven, Wayne and Lloyd as they were growing up. Doris loved being involved with her horses and riding. In the latter part of the 1960’s, Doris performed with the “Frontier Belles Side Saddle Club.” The Frontier Belles were organized in Grand Junction, Colo. in 1958 as a ladies side saddle drill team, celebrating the pioneer ladies of the 1880s in the spirit of the old west. The team performed locally in rodeo, parade, horse show, and county fair events. Doris was an outdoors kind of lady, who also enjoyed spending her indoors time, playing games with her family. She loved her role as a wife to Verne, mother to her sons, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother and she thrived on being a solid constant in their lives. She was very disciplined in her religious beliefs, she loved the Lord, and served as a bible and Sunday school teacher when she was able.
Doris is survived by three sons Steven Smith and wife Blanche of Texas, Wayne Smith and wife Linnette of Arizona, and Lloyd Smith and wife Lois of Oklahoma; one brother, Gene Wolfe and wife Rae Ann; nine grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and fourteen great great grandchildren.
