Dorothy O. Soden, 92, died Aug. 21 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 24, 1921, at Clay Center, to Richard A. and Dorthea J. (Obenland) Brueggemann. She married Carl Soden Dec. 21, 1946, at Mission. He died May 8, 2008. Mrs. Soden was a Great Bend resident since 1949, coming from Coffeyville. She was a teacher at schools in Morganville, Clay Center, Parsons, Topeka and Coffeyville, as well as St. Patrick Catholic School and Great Bend USD 428 in Great Bend.
Mrs. Soden was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel and Sigma Sigma Sigma.
Survivors include one daughter, Doris Butler, M.D., of Wichita; one sister, Doris M. Wingerson of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren, Erica, Karen Beth, Kirsten and Derek. She was preceded in death by daughter, Sara Johann “Sally” Soden.
Graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, with Father Mark W. Cowell officiating. Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Great Bend USD 428 Foundation to benefit to benefit Riley School “Success for All” Program, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
