KANSAS CITY — Gary Lee Popp, 51, passed away unexpectedly of a sudden healt attack on May 22. Born June 25, 1961, in Hoisington, he was the son of Maurice and Margaret (Fuller) Popp. Gary graduated from Hoisington High School. In 1979 he began working for Missouri Pacific RR, then on to Union Pacific RR in 1988. After that he was employed with Johnson County Water District for over 23 years from 1990 to present and appointed Operations Team Leader for 15 of those years.
Gary was a Bunko enthusiast, NASCAR Fan, member of the National Hot Rod Association and Treasurer of Quai1 Creek Home Owner’s Assoc. Gary was a devout financial supporter of the Harvestor’s and Rescue Missions for the Homeless. He loved his family, friends, close neighbors and pets.
Surviving him is his devoted wife of 22 years, Mary Jane; stepdaughters, Heather Johnson and Jennifer (Kyle) Peters; sister, Cindy (Richard) Dame; and brother, Rickey (Connie) Popp and his precious pet and buddy, Gigi; and four granddaughters, Alyssa and Katie Chavez and Bethany and Grace Peters. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Kathy (Mike) Tiszka; and brother-in-law, David (Janis) Mikesic and remembered fondly by many nephews and nieces. Preceding him in death were his parents; and his beloved Chow dog, Duke.
A Celebration of Gary’s life was held at  noon on Saturday, May 25, at Skradski Funeral Home.  Gary’s wishes were cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to “Kans for Kids” P.O. Box 178, Hoisington, KS 67544, www.skradskifh-kc.com.
