BUSHTON — George R. Hager, 84, died Aug. 13, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Jan. 3, 1932, in Rice County, he was the son of Wesley and Naomi Scott Hager. In 1958, he graduated from Bushton High School. On May 1, 1978, he married Joann Johnson in Lyons. A lifelong resident of Rice County he was a farmer. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman and called bingo for the American Legion.
Mr. Hager served in the United States Army from Dec. 12, 1952, to Oct. 21, 1954. He was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Lyons, and past commander of the American Legion of Chase, and was a member of Odd Fellows.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Hager of Bushton; a daughter Anna Tudor and husband David, of Bushton; a step-son, Augustus Esguerra and wife Sheila, of Hutchinson; and two step-grandchildren, Tara and Darian Esguerra, of Hutchinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank Hager; and wife Edith Murphy.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Birzer Funeral Home in Lyons with the Rev. Johnnie Hardie officiating. Burial will be at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Hospital in care of the funeral home.
