Gerald Joseph “Jerry” Prosser, 72, died Oct. 21 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 5, 1941 in Rush County, he was the son of William and Matilda (Birzer) Prosser. On Jan. 31, 1965 he married Leona Kober at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he was a service manager at Marlette Homes until its closing, then was owner and operator of Prosser Home Improvement, working as a finish carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and music, having played saxophone in a polka band.
Mr. Prosser was an Army National Guard veteran. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, charter member of Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsman Club, NRA, Kansas Wildlife Federation, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646, and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Prosser, of the home; one son, Jason Prosser and wife Lisa of Leawood; two daughters, Kelly Rucker and husband Ron of Attica, and Shawna Pocock and husband John of Minnetonka, Minn.; four sisters, Luetta Haines and husband John of Liberal, Wilma Stroud of Olathe, Elaine Trantham and husband Bill of Sharon, and Charlotte Schartz and husband Barry of Manhattan; one brother, Fred Prosser and wife Murine of Claflin; and six grandchildren, Marissa Rucker, Ryan Rucker, Morgan Pocock, Mary Pocock, Luke Prosser, and Reese Prosser.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family School or Lasting Life Ministries for the benefit of Almost Home, Inc., in care of the funeral home.
