Helen Freidenberger Lorenz 1921-2018

Helen L. Freidenberger Lorenz, 96, passed away July 27, 2018, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend.
Formerly of the Otis and Bison communities, Helen was born on July 29, 1921 on a farm near Otis. She was the daughter of George and Sophie Freidenberger. On July 27, 1944, she married Daniel Lorenz. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1994.
Helen began her career as a teacher in a one room school house. She was a school secretary at Otis High School, previous to being a cook at the Rush County Hospital. She retired from the hospital after 15 years. She then took a job as the librarian in the Bison City Library. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis and attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church while living in Great Bend. After she moved to Great Bend, she helped with the EARS program at Washington Elementary School, listening and helping children read. She was a great cook, an even better baker, but was always a teacher at heart.
Survivors include, her two daughters and their husbands, Anita and Bill Roberts of Fort Collins, Colorado and Donna and Ken Shaffer of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Mark Shaffer (step-grandson) of Great Bend, Amy Habiger (Mike) of Bushton, Joe Roberts and Kelly Roberts Hubbard of Fort Collins, Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Christine Shaffer of Great Bend, Alyah and Jordan Hubbard and Emmalyn Rose Reese , all of Fort Collins, Colorado; two brothers, Alex Freidenberger of Bison and Richard Freidenberger of Wichita, and one sister, Ruth Boele Ward of Ukiah, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 49 years, Daniel Lorenz; three sisters, Alma Deines, Esther Brack and Alice Kinzey, and two brothers, Herbert and George Freidenberger.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 30, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis, with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding. Burial will be in the Bison Baptist Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
