Hilda Chakir 1916 - 2015

Hilda Chakir, 98, died April 7 at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend. Born April 8, 1916, in rural Barton County, she was the daughter of Gustav “Gus” and Matilda (Liese) Kasselman. On Aug. 19, 1939, she married Theodore Richard “Dick” Griffith in Great Bend. He died on April 25, 1977. She then married Norman William Chakir on March 10, 1981, in Miami, Okla. He died on Dec. 30, 2012. A lifetime resident of Barton County she was a homemaker. She was a former 4-H Leader, and enjoyed her family, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and going to dances.
Mrs. Chakir was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Zarah EHU, Central Kansas Thread Benders Quilt Guild, and American Legion Post 180 Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Ron Griffith and his wife Pat of Smith Center; two daughters, Judy Burnette and Sandy Smith and her husband Taylor, both of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Doug Burnette, Carla Klein, Curt Griffith, Matt Smith, and Shawn Smith; one step-grandson, Michael McDonald; six great-grandchildren, John Stoss, Shelli Schmidt, Larami Parsons, Caleb Klein, Jenna Burnette, and Megan Burnette; two step great-grandsons, Ty McDonald and Caden McDonald; two great-great-granddaughters, Madison Henning and McKenna Schmidt; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Kasselman; and one sister, Dora Robison.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or Gentiva Hospice, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
