John H. Mitchell Jr., 79, died June 25 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 27, 1932, at Albany, N.Y., he was the son of John Henry and Ada (Oliver) Mitchell. He married Lois Ann Rule on June 5, 1955, at Green Island, N.Y. She died June 13, 2009. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from Troy and Green Island, N.Y., he worked as a production manager for Fuller Brush Company.
Mr. Mitchell attended Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, and American Legion Argonne Post 180.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth M. Mitchell and wife Lori of Great Bend, and Donald M. Mitchell and wife Debbi of Hoisington; one daughter, Denise Wassinger and husband Larry of Wamego; one sister, Barbara Adams of Rensselear, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Mitchell, and one sister, Joan Nash.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28 at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery North, with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
