John M. Heinz, age 83, longtime resident of Great Bend, Kan., passed away on Wednesday afternoon, March 22, 2023 in Great Bend. John was born on Dec. 12, 1939 at Great Bend to Lawrence and Evelyn (Kimpler) Heinz. He graduated from Bushton Rural High School in 1957, and served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from December of 1961 until April of 1966. John was a Real Estate Broker and owner of Heinz Real Estate and Property Management in Great Bend for over 30 years prior to his retirement. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of Knights of Columbus Council #862, American Legion Post #180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, all of Great Bend, Kan. John never liked to sit still, he was a “workaholic” and his farming youth never left his blood. When he wasn’t working, his favorite pastime was attending his grandkids’ sporting events and activities. He loved working in the yard, watching his KC Chiefs and was an “avid” coffee drinker. He enjoyed traveling, going to casinos and spending time with family and friends.
John is survived by his daughter Kristi K. Sciacca of Great Bend, Kansas; his stepson Bradley T. Luchau of Hutchinson, Kan.; two grandchildren: John “Landon” Sciacca and Shaley K. Sciacca, both of Great Bend; two sisters: Kathy Schartz of Ellinwood, Kan. and Carol Carr of Olathe, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife Melinda (Mitchell) Heinz, and his brother-in-law Patrick J. Schartz.
According to John’s wishes, a Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood, Kansas with Fr. Terrance Klein officiating. Online condolences may be left for the family and a complete obituary may be viewed at http://www.chartergreatbend.com/.
