Leona D. Armatys 1919 - 2017

 CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Leona D. Armatys, 97, of rural Cedar Rapids, Neb., passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017, at her home north of Cedar Rapids, Neb. She, was born on Nov. 26, 1919, near Albion, Neb., to Andrew and Myrtle (Bailey) Redler. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, Neb. Leona received her education and graduated from Albion Public High School. Following her graduation, she earned her teachers certificate where she taught in area country schools. On March 26, 1951, Leona was united in marriage to Theodore “Ted” Armatys at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, Neb. Following their marriage, the couple lived southwest of Cedar Rapids, Neb. on a farm, and in 1957, they moved to a farm north of Cedar Rapids, Neb. where she lived until her death. Leona helped her husband on the farm and together raised their family. In addition, Leona enjoyed baking, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, growing flowers, being outdoors and taking long walks. She also taught C.C.D. for many years. Most of all Leona loved and cherished her family. She was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, and the St. Anthony’s Altar Society.
Leona is survived by seven children, Jim (Kathi) Armatys of Great Bend, John (Mary) Armatys of Central City, Neb., Mary (Jim) Fehr of Columbus, Neb.. Tom (Nanda) Armatys of Cedar Rapids, Neb., Cathy (Larry) Pelster of Petersburg, Neb., Bill Armatys of Cedar Rapids, Neb., and Diane (Cliff) Kovar of David City, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Redler and Judy Redler; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ted in 2003; and eight brothers and sisters, Francis, Finley, Leo, Marian, John, Ramona, Mike, and Eddie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Neb. with Msgr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Neb. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at the church with a 7 p.m. Wake Service.
