Mabel E. Hiss, 91, died Dec. 18 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born April 9, 1923, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of August H. and Anna (Gagelman) Werhahn. On Oct. 29, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, John R. Hiss. He died on Aug. 4, 2005. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a homemaker and also worked at the Great Bend Tribune during World War II. She attended Washburn University.
Mrs. Hiss was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Presbyterian Women, taught Sunday School and served as an elder. She was also a member Order of Eastern Star Golden Sheaf Chapter, and was a Youth Friend at Riley Elementary School.
Survivors include one son, Bob Hiss and his wife Patsy of Great Bend; one daughter, Becky Hill of Great Bend; three grandsons, Mike Hill and wife Sydney of Garden City, Matt Hiss and wife Dena of Great Bend, and Mason Hiss of Great Bend and friend Heidi Martin; two great-grandsons, Collin Hiss and Graham Hiss; two great-granddaughters, Cara Crossland and Jamie Crossland; and one great-great-grandson, Eaton Crossland. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Martha Jane Hiss; two brothers, August W. “Gus” Werhahn and Walter Werhahn; and three sisters, Mildred Mull, Elfreda Walker and Margaret Werhahn.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Scott V. Solether and the Rev. Joshua Leu officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., on Monday at Bryant Funeral Home.
