Marie H. Schenkel 1925-2011

Marie H. Schenkel, 85, blessed mother, grandmother, and sister was welcomed home to be with the Lord on June 18 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 13, 1925 at Alexander the daughter of George and Katherine (Albrandt) Wittman.

She married Sam Schenkel June 29, 1949 at Clayton, New Mexico. He died Jan. 31, 1975. She was owner and operator of Schenkel Liquor for 48 years.

Mrs. Schenkel was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident.

Survivors include one son Doug Schenkel of Great Bend; four daughters, Karen Hill and husband Grover of Burlington, Colo., Chris Menzer and husband Mike of Great Bend, Janet Stos and husband Randy of Davenport, Iowa, Barbara Schenkel of Great Bend; one sister, Lydia Blehm of Great Bend; grandchildren, Brian Hill of Broomfield, Colo., Brett Hill of Burlington, Colo., John Hill of Clearwater, Evan Stos of Lenexa, Stephanie Stos of Kansas City, Mo.; Briana White of Great Bend, Emily Wenke of Great Bend, Rebecca Menzer of Great Bend, Michelle Menzer of Great Bend; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Jake Wittman, Theofiel Wittman, August Wittman, William Wittman, Herman Wittman, Benny Wittman, and Rueben Wittman, and two sisters, Maria Wittman, Emelia Holmes.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with The Reverend James A. Strasen officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Bryant Funeral Home.
