Mary A. McKay, 95, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2016. She was born to Herb and Faye Clowers in St. John, on Oct. 18, 1921, and grew up on a farm near Zook. After graduating Zook High School, Mary completed nurse’s training at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, and joined the Army Nurse Corp in 1942. She served in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines during WWII, where she met David J. McKay. They were married on Jan. 30, 1946.
She was the mother of three sons; David, with wife, Cheryl, of South Carolina, Daniel, with wife, Angela, of Great Bend, and son who preceded her in death, Kevin, with wife, Tracy, of Wichita. Mary also leaves six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Hays. The family plans to establish a memorial scholarship in her honor, to benefit nursing students at Barton County Community College.
