NORTONVILLE — Mary Ann Bertels (Shannon) of Nortonville, Kan. passed peacefully and with grace into eternal life Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at the Vineyard House in Overland Park, Kan. at the age of 89. She was born on May 22, 1932, in Searcy, Ark., the daughter of Harvey E. and Gladys H. (Gard) Shannon.
Mary Ann married Marvin F. Bertels on her birthday in 1950, in a double ring ceremony with Marvin’s sister, Mary and Herb Frederick. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2015. Marvin preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 2015.
Mary Ann was active in parish life serving on the Altar Society and an avid volunteer in the community. She loved going for walks, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing card games.
Mary Ann is survived by her eight children daughters, Dianne (Dennis) Call (Great Bend, Kan.), Margaret (Mark Wladika) Bertels (Berkeley, Calif.), Teresa (Colin) Albers (Nebraska City, Neb.), Francie (Mark) Sittenauer (Goodyear, Ariz.) and Joanie (Ken) Baxter (Eureka, Ill.); sons Jim (Kathleen) Bertels (Manhattan, Kan.), Ed (Kelly) Bertels (Edmond, Okla.) and Chrisssy (Bertels (Topeka, Kan.). She leaves a future generation of 15 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Other surviving relatives include a sister-in-law Rita Frederick (Peoria, Ariz.) and her first cousin, Beverley (Jim) Cole (Wichita, Kan.) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin; and two great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Nortonville Kan. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Friday, Jan. 7th at 6 p.m. at the Church with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Memorial
