Mary Lou Fryberger, 87, died Aug. 11 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 5, 1926 at Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of John and Mary (Russell) Taff. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a 1944 graduate of Great Bend High School. She was the first basketball homecoming queen at Great Bend High School.
On April 17, 1948, she married B.G. (Bill) Fryberger in Great Bend. He died on Oct. 24, 2006. She was the former co-owner of Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend and retired as assistant funeral director in 1985.
At one time, she was the secretary at the Great Bend Air Base, USO Entertainment, and later, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 180, and the Hospital Auxiliary. For 18 years, she and husband Bill managed the Argonne Rebel’s Drum and Bugle Cop.
She was on the Brit Spaugh zoo Board and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Community Lyric Singers, the Barton County Community College Theatre, and a member of First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Kent (Ann) Fryberger, Grand Junction, Colo.; Lynn (Nancy) Fryberger, Great Bend; and Vern (Michelle) Fryberger, Ellinwood. She is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Alice Dobbs.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Lennie Maxwell officiating. Friends and family may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday,with family receiving friends from 5-6:30 p.m. at Kimple funeral home in Ellinwood. Burial and graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Great Bend City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to BCCC Music Scholarship.
