Matilda M. "Tillie" Urban 1923 - 2011

HAYS — Matilda M. "Tillie" Urban, 88, died Dec. 21 at Hays Medical Center. Born Nov. 5, 1923, in Loretto, she was the daughter of Thomas M. and Bridget (Urban) Urban. On April 30, 1947, she married Leonard R. Urban at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Loretto. He died on Dec. 3, 1985. A resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., for 18 years, having been a resident of Rush and Ellis counties for a total of 70 years, she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Urban was a member of the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, in Colorado Springs, Colo., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3147 Auxiliary, and a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, both in La Crosse, a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Mary’s Altar Society, both in Loretto, and a former member of the Red Hat Society, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Survivors include six sons, Ronald J. Urban, and wife Cheryl, of Lincoln, Neb., LaVon R. Urban of Hoisington, Robert F. Urban of Woodland Park, Colo., Michael R. Urban, and wife Sandra, of Lawrence, Mark Urban, and wife Gail, of Olmitz, and Charles Urban, and wife Sandy, of Olmitz; a daughter, Debra A. Witte, and husband Mark, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Gilbert Urban of Salina; a sister, Jane Schumacher of Hays; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Leonard Urban; three brothers, Alfred Urban, Tom "Tommy" Urban, and Wendlin A. "Art" Urban; and four sisters Agnes Herrman, Edna Marie Urban, Florence Linenberger and Dorothy Schoendaller.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse with Father Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be at the La Crosse City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 6-7 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a vigil service and rosary; and from 9:30-10:20 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Shrine Inc. in Loretto.
