GARFIELD – Melvin E. Strobel, 84, passed away May 16, at Diversicare of Larned. He was born March 29, 1930, in Larned, the son of Arthur Eugene and Edna Mae Bird Strobel. On April 6, 1952, he married Alice Joan Fairchild in Larned. She passed away Dec. 7, 1997. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer/stockman.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Lions Club, Over 50 Club and was also a bus monitor for USD 495, all of Garfield. He served in the United States Army.
Survivors include two daughters, Melvina Jo (Daryl) Prescott, Garfield, and Tania J. (Don) Deets, Hays; a sister, Vadaline Strohm, Manhattan; four grandchildren, Emily Deets and Trevor Deets, both of Hays, Caleb Prescott, Larned, and Thomas Prescott, Macksville; and one great-grandchild, Breilynn Renz, Macksville.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary, with the Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 18, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Garfield Cemetery, Garfield, with military graveside rites.
