HAYS — Melvin J. “Mel” Schreiber, 83, died Jan. 25, 2015, at Hays Medical Center. Born Dec. 19, 1931, in Great Bend, he was the son of Fred and Margaret (Mauler) Schreiber. On Sept. 27, 1952, he married Frances L. “Frankie” (Musick) in Hutchinson. She died April 3, 2012. He was director of fleet maintenance for Becker Corporation in El Dorado for 21 years. He also worked 11 years at Thompson Transport in McPherson. In 2008 he moved to Hays from Andover.
Mr. Schreiber was a United States Navy veteran, serving on the USS Hancock. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include one son, Dale Schreiber and wife Beth of Gray, Tenn.; two daughters, Pam Joy and husband Fred of Hays, and Terrie Vandine of Wichita; one brother, Kenneth Schreiber and wife Joan of Olmitz; one sister, Betty Pancost and husband Allen of Sterling, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Schreiber of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Josh) Callahan, Jeff Schreiber, Chrisy (Tony) Crough, Scott (Briar) Schreiber, Jessica Vandine, Brett Schreiber, Katie Joy, and Courtney Vandine; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Father Paul Schreiber J.C.B. and Eugene Schreiber.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Inurnment will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Burrton Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., both at Clines Mortuary of Hays. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
