OVIEDO, Fla. — Mildred (Millie) Marie Brining Snyder, 91, died surrounded by family on Jan. 14, 2013 at her home in Oviedo, Fla.
She was born in Great Bend on Jan. 30, 1921 to Ray and Beula Brining. Millie grew up on her parents’ farm in Great Bend. After graduating from Great Bend High School, she attended Wesley Hospital Nurses training in Wichita and received her Registered Nurse’s license. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1944 and served in Okinawa in World War II where she met her future husband Sylvester Stevenson (Dutch) Snyder. After being honorably discharged from the military, Millie worked at Wesley Hospital in Wichita and then Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. She was married to Dutch Snyder in 1947. Millie was a dedicated mother and military wife, making a home for her family wherever they were stationed. She also found time for occasional part-time nursing and clerical work in the many cities she called home. She loved spending time with family, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles and was a dedicated letter-writer and coffee drinker. Her sense of humor, work ethic, resilience, and practicality remained unyielding until the end.
Millie is survived by her younger sister Wilma Brining (Don) Riegel, Lubbock, Texas; and her sister-in-law Clarice (Richard) Brining. She is also survived by her six children, Steven (Lynn) Snyder, Denver, Colo.; Sue (Gary) Alexander, Brentwood, Tenn.; Stacie (Mike) Curd, Tucker, Ga.; Scott (Deanna) Snyder, Orlando, Fla.; Sherman (Julie) Snyder, Fincastle, Va.; and Shellie (John) Ritter, Portland, Ore. Millie also leaves behind several grandchildren, Lauren (John) Compton King, Antioch, Tenn.; Joseph Curd, Mason (Alexandria) Curd, Mitchell Curd, and Haley Curd, all of Dallas, Texas.
Millie’s great-grandchildren, Wilson, Grant, and Susanna King live near Nashville, Tenn. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends remain to keep memories of Millie alive. Millie was preceded in death by her parents John Raymond Brining and Beula Marie Butler Brining; her husband Dutch Snyder; her older brother Raymond Brining and his wife Dorothy; her younger brother Richard Brining; and her brother-in-law Don (Wilma) Riegel.
