LAKE CHARLES, La. — Norma Lee Garrett. 82, died Dec. 4 at Christus Saint Patrick Hospital, Lake Charles, La. She was born May 10, 1928, at Great Bend, the daughter of Harry M. and Mary Anna (Weber) Schartz. She married Thomas Burke Garrett Dec. 29, 1948, at Ellinwood. He died May 19, 1982.

Mrs. Garrett was a Lake Charles, La., resident since 1982, coming from Great Bend, moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1969.

Mrs. Garrett was a member of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, Lake Charles. She was a former member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend.

Mrs. Garrett attended Sacred Heart College and Academy, where she was active in the arts. While in Corpus Christi she received her Realtor’s license and was active in the local market. After the death of her husband, she moved to Lake Charles to be near her daughters and grandchildren. During her years in Lake Charles, she remained active in the family’s agriculture business, was a patron of the arts, and supported her grandchildren in all their endeavors.

Special thanks go to her caregivers, Dionne King, Veronica Fontenot, Tara Johnson, China Guillory and Sheila Williams, and to Michelle and Pam of Harbor House Hospice. Their love and care for our mother is greatly appreciated. Mrs. Garrett will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Karla Whiteman and husband Dr. Jerry, and Carol Flanagan and husband Dr. David, all of Lake Charles, La.;

one sister, Joan Chisholm and husband Paul of Great Bend; one brother, Melvin Schartz and wife Marilyn of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Dr. Stacy Beaty of Hurst, Texas, Shelly Stanton of Dallas, Texas, Judith Flanagan of Stafford, England, and Thomas Flanagan of Baton Rouge, La.; four great-grandchildren, Russell Beaty of Hurst, Texas, Connor Beaty of Hurst, Hannah Beaty of Hurst and William Stanton of Dallas, Texas; amd a sister-in-law, Martha Garrett of Aurora, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister-in-law, Sue Garrett; and nephew, Brad Chisholm.

A Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Newman University, Harbor House Hospice, or Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
