Norman W. Chakir, 94, died Dec. 30, 2012, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1918, at Ellis, the son of William A. and Louise (Schoenthaler) Chakir. Norman married Mildred Kohlmeier in 1944, in Ellinwood. She passed away in 1974. He then married Hilda Griffith on March 10, 1981, at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Mr. Chakir was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.
A farmer and stockman, he had been a Great Bend resident since 1981, coming from Washington, Kan.
He was a member of the Lutheran faith and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Chakir, of the home; one stepson, Ronald Griffith and wife Pat of Smith Center; two stepdaughters, Judy Burnette, and Sandy Smith and husband Taylor, all of Great Bend; three nephews, Duane L. Keller and wife Cindy, Dale Keller and wife Kelly, and Jerry Keller and wife Lois, all of Ellis; one grandson, Michael McDonald and wife Kimberly of New Richmond, Wis.; two great-grandsons, Ty McDonald and Caden McDonald; five step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Fred Chakir, and one sister, Bessie Keller.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Scott Solether officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Linn. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.
