Ray S. Schenkel, 77, died Dec. 15 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 20, 1935 in Topeka, he was the son of Emil H. and Hannah (Foos) Schenkel. On Aug. 12, 1959 he married Laura Ann Steinbacher in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime resident of Great Bend he was
a guidance counselor at Harrison Junior High and taught geography, history, and driver’s education at Roosevelt Junior High. He later owned and operated Schenkel Construction for over 20 years.
Mr. Schenkel was active with the Barton County Historical Society. He also was a member of the Club at Stoneridge and served as past president of the Lake Barton Golf Association.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Ann Schenkel, of the home; two sons, Scott Schenkel and wife Leilani of Great Bend, and their children Evan and Cory; and Todd Schenkel and wife Michelle of Silver Lake, and their children Taylor and Tate.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Reginald A. Urban officiating. A private inunrment will be at a later date at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.
