LA CROSSE — Rex W. Hafenstine, 63, died Feb. 6, at his home. Born Aug. 28, 1951, in Quinter, he was the son of Walter Nelson and Mary I. (Armbruster) Hafenstine. He was a resident of La Crosse, for 24 years, moving from Hays. In 1970 he graduated from WaKeeney High School, and attended Fort Hays State University. On Dec. 15, 1990, he married Betty Horyna in La Crosse. In the 1990s, he was employed by KDWP. Later, as a driller in the oil industry, he was employed by Murfin Drilling Company for 32 years before his retirement .
Mr. Hafenstine was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and Knights Of Columbus Council 2970, both of La Crosse.
Survivors include, his wife, Betty Hafenstine of La Crosse; one son, Rex Wade Hafenstine of Fullerton, Calif.; three step-sons, Brandy Roberds of Hays, Ronald Roberds of Hutchinson, and Peter Zamarripa of Great Bend; one daughter, Beth Strecker of Haysville; two step-daughters, Misty Dunning of Basehor and Kathleen Lopez, of San Diego, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his step-mother, Jean Hafenstine of WaKeeney; one brother, Douglas Hafenstine of Sterling; one step-brother, Mark Zeman of WaKeeney; two sisters, Icle Faye Weilert of La Crosse, and Carol Hobbs of Hill City; and two step-sisters, Jolanda Zeman of WaKeeney and Dwana Zahn of Ellis. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one step-brother Doug Zeman.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse, with Father Matthew Kumi officiating. Interment will be at the La Crosse City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse, with the family receiving friends from 6. to 7 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Church visitation will be from 9 to 9:50 a.m. on Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to the ALS Association.
