UPATOI, Ga. — Sarah Elizabeth Wright Simpson, 89, passed away Aug. 15, 2021 at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, Kan.

Graveside service will be held, Aug. 25, 2021 at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Section of Park Hill Cemetery, Macon Road, Columbus, Ga. 

Sarah, daughter of the late Preacher Paul T. and Annie Belle (Watkins) Wright was born Dec. 27, 1931, Natural Bridge, Va.  

She was Baptist by faith and one of the founding members of Wynnbrook Baptist Church, Columbus, Ga. She taught Adult Ladies Bible Class on Sundays for over 40 years at churches in GA, VA, RI, KS and HI. In 1969, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Regent, Oglethorpe DAR Chapter, Columbus, Ga. She also served as a Chairman at the GA DAR State level. She was a member of the Columbus Students Club and served all level of officers positions to include president. 

She graduated from Toccoa High School, Toccoa, Ga. in 1948 and later graduated from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C. in 1951. She taught home economics at the Tamassee DAR school, 1951-1952.

During college she met the love of her life, Richard Russell Simpson. They married June 2, 1952 in Westminster, S.C. The next 30 years, Sarah traveled with Richard during his military service in the Army. She enjoyed moving from Post to Post totaling 13 times with their final destination Fort Benning, Ga. Upon Richard’s retirement from the Army, as a Colonel, in 1982, they settled in Upatoi, Ga. where she spent the next 34 years. In March 2014, she moved to the Gardens of Calvary Assisted Living, Columbus, Ga.

September 2016, she moved to Hoisington, Kan. and lived with her daughter and son-in-law for 3½ years. January 2019, she moved to Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kan. moving in December 2019 to Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, Kan.  

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, and only sister, Julia Rose Sublett. On March 8, 2013 her husband, Richard, passed away.

Sarah and Richard were blessed with three children. Richard R. Simpson Jr. (Theresa) of Whites, Ga., Paula F. Manweiler (Gene) of Hoisington, Kan. and Elizabeth A. Simpson, Denver, Colo. She has four grandchildren, Tracy Engerman, Brooke Stillwell, Shanna Simpson and Richard R. Simpson, III. In addition, three great-grandchildren, Owen Shepheard, Molly Engerman and Copeland Stillwell. 

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to be sent to Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) or Wynnbrook Baptist Church, Columbus Ga. in care of the funeral home Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, Ga.
