Sister Charlotte Unrein, 90, died Sept. 22, 2021, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. She was born March 31, 1931, in LaCrosse, Kan., the daughter of Carl and Lidwina (Zimmerman) Unrein. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in 1945 and pronounced vows in 1948. Sister Charlotte celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 2018.
Sister Charlotte ministered in a variety of different ways. She began doing domestic work, and then she was sent to Nigeria as one of the original three missionaries to go there. After five years in Africa she returned to Great Bend, where she was in charge of the sewing room. She then earned a degree in nursing and worked in Garden City and Salina. When she returned to the motherhouse in 2008, she took up her work of making jellies and other items for the annual bazar.
Sister Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and four brothers. She is survived by one brother, Timothy Unrein, Ocala, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 27, 2021. A Vigil Service will be held Sunday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. All attendees are asked to wear a mask. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sister Charlotte may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.
