ST. CATHARINE, Kent. — Sr. Denise Mueting, 87, died July 28, 2026, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Sansbury Care Center in St. Catharine, Kent. She was born Sept. 28,1938, in Axtel, Kan., the daughter of Leo and Marie (Buessing) Mueting.
She entered the Dominican Sisters community on Aug. 30, 1956, and pronounced vows on June 13, 1959. This year marks her 67th year of religious profession.
In 1961, Sr, Denise got her bachelor’s degree in education from Sacred Heart College in Wichita, Kan. She received her master’s degree in education from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, Wisc. in 1973.
From 1961-1982, Sr. Denise taught in grade schools in Clonmel, Willowdale, Great Bend, and Hutchinson, Kan., as well as Westminster, Colo. After taking a year out to work with the Active Spirituality Program in Cincinnati, Ohio, she came back to Kansas, teaching primary grades in Garden City and Haysville. In 1989, she went back to Colorado, working at the Archdiocesan Housing and The Gardens at St. Elizabeth Retirement Center in Denver, Colo. She retired to the Great Bend Motherhouse in 2020 and in 2026 traveled to Sansbury Care Center.
In 1969, Sr. Denise won the Outstanding Young Teacher award. She has participated in commission meetings, and volunteered as Eucharistic Minister at Lutheran Medical Center & Hospice in Wheat Ridge, and St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colo. She enjoyed line dancing, hiking, reading, attending cultural events, dance lessons, and relaxing at the cabin above Cripple Creek.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Leo and Dick; and sister Marie. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Thomas (Audrey) Mueting as well as her sisters and brothers-in-law Mary Lee Beckman, Elaine Brown, Janet (Lester) Fangman, Gladys Rottinghaus, Patricia (Bob) Claas, Helen Mueting (OSB), Rita (Ron) Potter, Darla Mueting, and the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
A Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026. Both will be held at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sister Denise may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.
