NEWTON — Terrance “Terry” F. Meyers, 80, passed away on May 1, 2022, at his residence in Newton, Kan. surrounded by loved ones.
He was born in Great Bend, Kan., on March 29, 1942, the son of Victor and Hilda (Dauwe) Meyers. Terry grew up in Larned, Kan. and attended Larned High School, graduating with the class of 1960. He attended St. Mary’s of the Plains Catholic College on a basketball scholarship. Terry graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts.
On Aug. 31st, 1963, Terry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty Lou (Berscheidt) Meyers. Terry and Betty had two children, Brett and Jill. They lived in several places across Kansas but would reside in Newton, Kan. Betty preceded Terry in death on Dec. 12th, 2021. The couple would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in August of 2022.
For 11 years Terry worked as a Field Manager for Ford Motor Company, based out of Kansas City, Mo. He continued to work with the Ford Motor Division in various positions throughout the remainder of his career.
Terry loved his family, sports of all kinds, and being involved in St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was an usher, lector, and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was instrumental in starting the annual St. Mary’s Auction and he was faithful in mowing the St. Mary’s cemetery on a regular basis as part of his volunteer commitment. Terry enjoyed the outdoors, with a green thumb when it came to gardening and plants.
Terry’s personality was that of humor, joy, and sometimes being ornery. A popular guy throughout his lifetime, he was kind and considerate of others, always the first to step up and offer help wherever or whenever needed. He was a gentleman who enjoyed being with his friends and family. He will be greatly missed.
Terry is preceded in death by wife, Betty Meyers; son, Brett Meyers; and his parents, Victor and Hilda Meyers. He is survived by his daughter, Jill (Ed) Griswold of Newton, Kan.; brother, Clayton (Marge) Meyers; sister, Mary Jane (Greg) Fitts; grandchildren, Toria (Adam) Deterding and great-grandchild, Demi Lou Deterding; grandchildren Shaylee (Storm) Mosher and great-grandchildren, Kimber and Remi Mosher; and grandchildren, Easton Griswold, Jentry Griswold and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, Kan. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, Kan. A graveside service will take place at Lakin Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, Kan. at 3:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Petersen Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses or to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
