Thon “T.P.” Schartz, 84, died June 5 at his home in Great Bend. Born March 17, 1930, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Anthony Nicholas and Mary Edna (Rickert) Schartz. On May 23, 2009, he married Myrna (Beal) Branstetter in Seward. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a retired insurance adjuster for Crawford and Company, and had previously farmed, operated Schartz Construction and managed the 300 Bowl. He played organized baseball and city basketball and was an avid golfer.
Mr. Schartz was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, American Legion Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1127, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Myrna Schartz, of the home; three sons, Shannon Schartz and his wife Jennifer of Great Bend, Randy Schartz and his wife Suzanne of Overland Park, and Monte Schartz of Great Bend; one daughter, Deena Hutsell and her husband Alan of Prairie Village; two sisters, Lael Finch of Overland Park, and Toni Marie Wellshear of Topeka; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wade Schartz and Gary Schartz; and one sister, Zita Schartz.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore and Father Rene Guesnier as concelebrants. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery with military rites by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
