GREAT BEND — Vernon William Popp, 79, died March 27, 2012 at his home.
He was born Feb. 13, 1933 at rural Hoisington, the son of Wilhelm “Bill” and Olinda (Schwartzkopf) Popp.
He married Eldena Hamilton May 3, 1953. They later divorced. He was a farmer in the rural Olmitz and Hoisington areas. He worked as a driller in the oilfield for many years and also worked at Dillons.
Mr. Popp was a resident of Great Bend since 2001 coming from Hoisington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1956. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include a son, William “Bill” Popp, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Robin Houser and husband Roger, Guthrie, Okla.; Roberta Gales, Riverside, Mo.; four sisters, Delores DeWald-Hanhardt and husband Robert, LaCrosse; LoRee Dietz and husband Elroy, Russell; Theresa Dietz and husband Emil, Otis; Shirley Maier and husband Robert, Great Bend; a daughter-in-law, Mary Eberle-Popp, Lubbock, Texas; three granddaughters, Sara Wilkins and husband Stephen, Kayla Gales and Amanda Popp; two grandsons, Alex Popp and Travis Howser and a great grandson: Connor Wilkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Brent Popp.
A Memorial Service is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Adam Wutka officiating. Inurnment will be at Schoenfeldt Cemetery, Barton County. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
