William “Bill” Arthur Dicks

KIRKPATRICK, Ind. — William “Bill” Arthur Dicks, 72, of Kirkpatrick passed away on Dec. 31, 2022, after a nearly 18-year battle with cancer. A son to Harold Scanlon Dicks and Ann Dicks, he was born in Lafayette on his mother’s birthday, Nov. 1, 1950. As you might guess, he was her favorite gift of all time. Bill was the valedictorian of the Linden High School Class of 1968. He married Brenda Buckley Dicks on June 21, 1975.

While he really enjoyed school, he enjoyed the friends he made. While in grade school, he developed his love for 4-H and sports, especially basketball. In 3rd grade, Bill became closer to Mike Muttersbaugh and Mac Smith to help hone his skills in baseball and basketball. Those friendships continued to grow through high school. While showing cattle, Bill had some wild and crazy times with John Keffer, Rex Foxworthy, Bill Fugate and many others.

After graduation, Bill attended Indiana University from 1968-1972, where he studied Business Administration and was an active member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He was especially proud of his ride in IU’s Little 500.

His passion for the cattle project in Montgomery County 4-H led him to being involved in the Indiana and American Chianina Association, where he became close to the Sheets family. His love for cattle was passed on to his kids and grandkids. Marylou 83Y was a special cow that has produced the show progeny for his grandkids. One of his prized accomplishments was raising the Grand Champion Chi Heifer, shown by the Barker family, at Denver in 1996.

He raised hogs for several years privately and then for Agri-Vest. He then worked in sales at Wright Implement/AHW in Crawfordsville, retiring in 2019. After retirement, he enjoyed loving on his cows, traveling, cheering on his IU Hoosiers, and spending time with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ann Dicks, in-laws - Mildred and Alva Buckley, brothers-in-law - Joe, Larry, and David Buckley, and nephew - Brent Buckley.

Bill is survived by his wife, Brenda; sisters, Alice(Tony) Sessi of Austin, Texas and Amanda(Vic) Richard of Columbia, Mo.; brothers, Jim (Sarah) Dicks of Brownsburg, Ind., and David (friend - Janel) Dicks of Tenn.; son, Shane (Hayley) Dicks of Great Bend, Kan.; daughter, Stacey(Adam) Hartley of Tipton, Ind.; grandchildren, Dalton Dicks, Parker Dicks, Emily Hartley and Jacob Hartley, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7th at Burkhart Funeral Home. Services will begin at 1 p.m., led by Pastor Mike Parks.  Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery, near Clarks Hill, Ind.

Bill would love for everyone attending the visitation to wear red in honor of the Hoosiers, but understands that could be challenging for many of his family and friends that constantly reminded him to Boiler Up. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Montgomery County 4-H Cattle Barn in care of Jason Gilliland, 400 Parke Avenue, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
