Dear Editor:
Many residents of Ellinwood and Great Bend, who enjoy watching high school students compete in track, will remember Pedro Montoya. He competed for Ellinwood High School in cross country and track and graduated in May, 2014. His mother, Monica Ringering, works at Great Bend High School as a para and his step father is Russell Ringering. They live in Ellinwood.
When Allen Community College, Iola, recruited Pedro, I visited with their president, Mr. John Masterson. I told him he should get to know Pedro because he was such a fine young man and a great athlete. On Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11, there was a community college meeting where Mr. Masterson and I both attended. Mr. Masterson told me that all the coaches at Allen Community College had selected Pedro as the most outstanding student athlete for this school year in all sports. He was pleased to tell me this because he knew Pedro and his family were friends of my wife and me.
President Masterson was not sure if the Allen Community College athletic department had sent a press release to the newspapers in this area. I called Pedro’s mother and she said there had not been an article about this in the Ellinwood paper. I have not seen a press release in the Great Bend Tribune about Pedro.
This is an awesome honor for this young man who has signed to run track for Wichita State next year. Congratulations to Pedro Montoya.
