Dear Editor,
In November of 1996 I had radical prostate surgery followed by 34 radiation treatments the following February. I had to travel to Hutchinson for these radiation treatments, five days a week for 34 sessions. While taking these treatments I heard that Central Kansas Medical Center was trying to obtain funding and a location for a cancer center in Great Bend. I was elated! I knew that I wouldn’t be able to take advantage of this facility but I could surely campaign for its being.
My prostate cancer now has returned and I am able to have chemotherapy treatments here in Great Bend at the Heartland Cancer Center. I am very grateful to the personnel at CKMC who were instrumental in seeing the need and promoted the building and furnished it with its high tech equipment. The staff of oncologists and radiologists who treat patients here are top notch. Jamie Hutchinson, HCC director and her staff are wonderful and very caring.
My wife, Kay and I are members of the Cancer Support Group and we encourage the community to come to the Heartland Cancer Center to celebrate its seven years in Great Bend, on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., for the circle-of-life celebration for those
touched by cancer.
They will have a balloon launch from the parking lot at the cancer center. Please come and launch a balloon for your loved one. We will have red balloons for cancer survivors, yellow for care givers and white for remembered deceased loved ones.
Bill and Kay Maneth,
Great Bend
