Communities should be involved in pool decision

Dear Editor,
We would like to express our opinion on the local college swimming pool controversy.
This school was founded in the late 60’s. It was called Barton County Community College, implying to us a facility supported and used by the county and community. That pool has been used over the years for the Boy Scouts, the Great Bend High School Swim Team and the Great Bend Summer Swim teams. Kids from the Claflin and Hoisington areas were on the summer swim teams and used the pool. These are our community kids using the college pool facility. This usage required communications between the school districts, our communities and the college. USD 428 has partnered with the Great Bend Recreation Commission in the use of many different facilities. By doing this it prevents the duplicity of structures which saves the taxpayers money.
We think it would behoove the Barton County College Trustees, USD 428, Great Bend Recreation Commission as well as the communities of Ellinwood, Hoisington and Claflin to work together to find a resolution to this problem. This is a County Community College ... the communities as a whole should be involved in the decision making process. This way their thoughts and voices are considered in a final solution.
