Support local businesses

Dear Editor,
Recently the city of Great Bend chose to eliminate the position of city engineer and utilize the services of a professional engineering firm to be more cost efficient. The process of selection was open to any applicant.
The city selected a firm from Wichita with a monthly retainer fee while a local company, EBH Engineering, was passed over – although they didn’t have a monthly fee and their corporate office is one block from the city offices. EBH has been a fixture in Great Bend for 65 years.
We often hear, see and read about supporting our local economy through local businesses. One would expect this to apply unilaterally. Apparently it does not.
