High summer temperatures pose a health risk, but not everyone has a place to cool off. RSVP/Volunteers in Action has organized a network of local “cooling stations” to help people without fans or air conditioning get out of the heat.
It’s a great idea. Anyone wanting to locate a cooling station can call 620-792-1614 before 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are even volunteers ready to provide transportation if needed.
There are some rules to observe, such as no alcohol or tobacco, but these are mostly rules of common courtesy. The stations don’t accept pets. Anyone who does have a pet should remember to provide it with plenty of water and shade.
Some people find a good place to cool off is the Great Bend Public Library. It has the added advantages of offering things to do and it is open on Saturdays. Plus it has a nifty geothermal air conditioner.
