When the personal computer came out in the late twentieth century, the world changed forever. They were clunky machines, but they took over jobs that once were done by hand.
Productivity improved immeasurably.
Since that time, the speed of change in the computer world and in our everyday lives has increased until changes are lightning fast. Every nook and cranny of our lives have been affected.
Remember, common usage of internet began in the mid-1990s with incredibly slow dial-up, yet today, we can’t imagine life without it. A mere twenty years later, we are used to the almost instantaneous response we now get.
Nearly every occupation has changed because of the computer. In fact, it’s hard to think of one that hasn’t.
Virtual schools are the wave of the future, particularly at the college level. A virtual school has no teacher, but is handled entirely by computer.
Good for the Otis-Bison school district for being on forefront of this technological revolution and offering these classes.
While not every class is suitable for virtual schooling, many are. Perhaps it will help with the cost of a college education.
Certainly, there are disadvantages to virtual schools such as increasing isolation among young people. There are always unintended consequences.
Who wants to go back to a clunky typewriter, the mimeograph machine, or replace email with even a relatively new technology, fax machines?
We can’t stop it. All we can do is embrace it, knowing that is our only choice.
