Coat drive starts next week

“Winter is Coming” is the motto of the House of Stark in George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones,” and a fact for residents of Great Bend.
Sure, we still have a few weeks of summer and the entire fall season to get through, but eventually the days will turn shorter and colder. When they do, it would be great if everyone had a warm coat to wear. Especially the children. That’s you come in — that is, we all have an opportunity to help.
Once again, Trinity United Methodist Church, at Broadway and South Patton Road, is organizing a Community Coat Redistribution. Starting next week, people are invited to clean out their closets and find some “gently used” coats and jackets that they no longer need. Take these to Trinity, or to one of the Great Bend USD 428 schools, or to Master Cleaners. The folks at Master Cleaners will clean the coats and, toward the end of September, the church will invite everyone who wants a coat to come and pick one up.
For children and senior citizens especially, being protected from the elements is especially important. Long before the first day of winter, there are days when it isn’t safe to be outside for long without a good wrap.
So remember, this weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, and the next two weeks are a time for gathering those coats and jackets. Sept. 27 is the day all of those items find new homes. There just may be a nip in the air by that day, but we’ll be feeling the warmth of human compassion.
