To the editor:
Replying to “Living in a Vehicle” A Women’s View (Wednesday, Jan. 26 edition):
I think we are all aware of the plight of the homeless; it is, at times, an untold an unspoken story. A majority of folks do not want to be homeless. Yes, there are some who enjoy the freedom of no strings attached lifestyle, but I think they are the minority. You interviewed some who are living in a car and they told you they are happy. I would agree a car is much better protection than nothing else, but beyond that exterior toughness is probably a longing for a more permanent shelter.
Even if your intention was not to be uncaring it came across as being so. Were you trying to be an entertainer or an investigator, neither was realized. Dangling others’ struggles, while at the same time telling your readers “I hope this never happens to me” came across as thoughtless and frankly like a group of people gossiping. Were you assuming no homeless person would read this? Perhaps lending a hand rather than putting pen to paper or finger on keyboard would have served you better.
