Barton baseball keeps rolling with sweep of Nebraska schools

Barton baseball drops 2 of 3 at Rose State.

The Barton baseball team ran its winning streak to six with a pair of wins over Nebraska schools in midweek games at home.

Barton defeated McCook by a 10-3 score in the first game then defeated Northeast Community College in the nightcap, 10-5.

In between those two games, McCook beat Northeast by a 10-8 score at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Barton is now 10-1 on the season with a pair of games against the Sterling JV Monday before starting Jayhawk West play this weekend against Hutchinson.

Barton scored in five of its six at bats in the opener against McCook, which fell to 4-7 with the loss.

No Cougar had more than one hit in the win with Alex Rodgers getting his fourth home run of the season and Colter Maldanado his first. Maldonado’s blast was a 3-run shot to left in the third.

Logan Phillips threw four innings of 2-hit shutout baseball for the win.

In the finale of the evening, the Cougars opened with a 4-run first and three more in the second to take the lead on the way to the win.

Rodgers had a big game at the plate, with a pair of doubles and a triple, scoring three times from his leadoff spot.

Jordan Ellison hit his team-leading fourth home run in the win, a 2-run blast.

Brenton Thiels picked up the win for the Cougars, striking out seven in five innings of work.

The Sterling JV visits Barton Monday with a 1 pm first pitch to the doubleheader then Barton is off to Hutchinson for two Thursday.

The Blue Dragons return the doubleheader in Great Bend on Saturday.
