The 13th ranked Barton baseball team took a step away from the grind of the Jayhawk West, rolling to an easy 16-2 win over the McPherson junior varsity on a cool, damp Monday afternoon at Lawson-Biggs Field.
The Cougars used a big fifth inning to secure the 7-inning victory.
The Mac JV scored twice in the top of the first inning but would not score again as Barton put up runs in all but one frame.
The Cougars scored seven times in the fifth inning to turn a 3-run lead into a 12-2 contest and put the game in position to be a run-rule win.
Barton pounded out 13 hits in the win, led by a perfect 3-for-3 outing from Harrison Denk with three RBI and three runs scored. Clay Lockett had three hits and scored three runs from the 9-hole in the order.
Tim Bell had a pair of hits – both for extra bases. Bell finished with a double and triple to produce three RBI.
Jared Maneth continued to swing a hot bat, collecting a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBI. Brett Bonar had a double and two hits as well.
Cade Peters gave up one earned run over his four innings on the mound to get the win and is now 1-0 on the season. He struck out three and walked none, allowing four hits.
The Cougars will get back into West play Thursday with a trip to Pratt.
Barton and Colby are both 9-3 in the West, tied for the top spot. Barton is 24-6 overall. Butler is in a virtual tie with the Cougars and Trojans at 11-5 but are percentage points behind having played more games. The only other team above .500 is Cloud County at 9-7. Hutchinson is 8-8.
In Pratt, Barton gets a team that has struggled at times this season with a 9-19 overall mark and a 4-12 conference record. Pratt did hand Colby one of its three West losses and has a win over Butler in as well during a 4-game series.
