Perhaps there was some revenge on the minds of the 25th-ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team.
After all, Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division foe Garden City upset the Cougars 66-47, when they were ranked No. 9 back on Jan. 9.
After that game, uniformed police officers in Garden City had to separate the two teams before a melee broke out.
On Saturday night at Kirkman Activity Center, Barton took the life out of the Broncbusters by building a 44-25 halftime lead on the way to a 73-56 romp.
“I think what happened last time played a part in the first half,” said Barton head coach Craig Fletchall, whose team improved to 21-4 overall, including 8-3 in league play. “I thought our guys were focused, and revenge isn’t always a good thing, but I think that game a month ago left a sour taste in our mouth and we wanted to come out and win with class.
“I thought we went to the boards hard, and the way our guys represented Barton basketball ... I was pleased with our effort.”
Point guard Turon Parker scored 18 points and fellow sophomore guards Andell Cumberbatch and Al Key finished with double-doubles to lead the Cougars. Cumberbatch had 15 points and 16 rebounds, and Key had 10 points and 11 rebounds, along with a team-best six assists.
Power forward Jade Cathey led Garden City (10-15, 2-9) with a double-double — 18 points and 10 rebounds — and shooting guard Chris Hall added 15 points, but missed 7 of 10 3-pointers.
The Busters shot a miserable 6-for-27 from downtown, and Barton was never seriously threatened in the second half, outrebounding the visitors 52-32, as post players Raphael Stephens and Raheem Johnson had seven and six boards, respectively.
“Twenty-one offensive boards was huge,” Fletchall said. “Garden City went toe-to-toe with Hutch on Wednesday night and outrebounded them by 14.
“We outrebounded (Garden) by 20 and went to the glass like men. That was probably most pleasing.”
Barton travels to The Power Plant in El Dorado on Monday to take on Butler, which knocked off NJCAA top-ranked Hutchinson 70-64 on Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Cougars take on Hutch on Wednesday night at Kirkman Activity Center, starting at 7:30, following the women’s 5:30 game.
“This is a big week for us,” Fletchall said in an understatement.
