WICHTIA – Things don’t get much more exciting than Saturday afternoon at the Stryker Sports Complex.
Barton and Kansas City Kansas went to the final minutes of regulation to determine which team would move on the Region VI Championship.
The Cougars would be that team. Barton scored with 2:09 to play in the semifinal match, eliminating 10th ranked KCK from competition.
The match was moved indoors at Stryker due to the weather.
Barton will now advance to the title game Sunday at 3 pm back outdoors unless warranted.
Awaiting the Cougars will be Butler. Butler knocked off No. 16 Cowley in the opening round then eliminated No. 20 Hutchinson in the semifinals.
The Grizzlies finished fourth in the Jayhawk East before catching fire in the post season.
Barton handed Butler a 4-0 defeated just two weeks ago. Butler is 7-8 on the year and Barton is now 12-3-1.
Barton and KCK battled to a scoreless tie through the game’s first 45 minutes of action.
The Cougars were the first to break onto the scoreboard when Seulgi Lee headed in Annika Gerdau’s corner kick early in the second half.
That lead held for nearly 15 minutes before KCK got the equalizer with 22:37 to play in the match.
The game stayed 1-all to the final minutes.
With just more than two minutes to play, Barton’s Kadin Stinson got a breakaway and beat the KCK keeper with 2:09 left on the clock.
Game winner.
In the last couple of minutes, KCK got some looks, but nothing good and Barton went into celebration.
