Barton men finish third at KWU Invitational

Three meets into the fall portion of the season, the Barton men’s golf team continues to score well. For the third straight meet, the Cougars finished in the top at the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational at the Salina Country Club.
After finishing first and second the first two meets, Barton took third in Salina with a 2-day total of 588. Sterling won the team event with an 11-over par 571 while fellow Jayhawk conference member Dodge City finished second with a 579.
“The guys shot really well,” Coach Doug Kaiser said. “It was pretty windy conditions and they played through it. The second day we hit the ball very well.”
Individually the Cougars put two players in the top 10 and three in the top 15. Leading the way was sophomore Jakkapat Horsangchai. Horsangchai shot an even par 70 the opening day to put himself in a 3-way tie for the lead.
Horsangchai came back Tuesday with a 73 to finish tied for third at 143. Dalton Bartlett of Sterling followed his 70 with a sizzling 4-under par 66 to win individual honors with a 136. Teammate Lorenzo Butler had back-to-back rounds of even par 70 for a 140.
Also placing in the top 10 was freshman Thitipong Homruen in a tie for ninth. Homruen shot 74 to on the opening day then came back with a 1-over 71 to move into the top 10 with a 145.
Sophomore Seokhun Kang followed a similar route with a 76 the opening day and a 1-over 71 the final day for a 147 and a tie for 14th.
Also showing great improvement the final day was sophomore Riley Kane. Kane shot 80 to open play and came back with six birdies the final day for a 74. His 154 total was tied for 34th.
Jaron Kellerman shot 79-81 for a 160, good for 54th. Playing as an individual, Dakota Soukup shot a pair of 77’s for a 154, tied with Kane for 34th.
The Cougars still have two more events this fall, starting Monday and Tuesday at Turkey Creek in McPherson. Barton will close the fall at home on Oct. 24 at StoneRidge Country Club.
