Barton men lose KJCCC tilt at No. 10 Dodge
Barton Basketball

DODGE CITY — It was a good start to the second semester for the Barton men’s basketball team.

The Cougars opened with a pair of wins after closing out the first semester with three straight losses.

Then came a cancellation for the men against Colby Wednesday as COVID 19 protocols put the game on ice.

That brief winning streak came to an end Saturday as Barton lost to No. 10 Dodge City on the road.

With the loss Barton fell to 4-7 in the Jayhawk and 10-7 overall on the year. That dropped Barton into a tie for eighth in the conference with a whole host of teams.

Dodge City kept its place at the top of the standings at 11-1 along with Hutchinson. The Conquistadors are 16-2 overall.

Barton led much of the first half, using a 13-2 run to take a 24-19 lead. During the run Keith Robinson scored five including a trey and Myles Thompson added four with a hook shot.

But a 3-minute scoring drought and an 11-0 run put Dodge City ahead before the end of the half. Dodge went to the locker room up 47-38.

The Cougars were still very much in the game following a steal and two free throws by Hannes Saar with 12 minutes left in the game.

That capped a 10-2 run by Barton and trimmed the lead to 61-57.

But what followed was an 8-0 run by the Conquistadors to put the lead back into double figures. Barton never got it to single digits after that.

Pretty much any hopes of a rally were put to bed following a 9-3 Dodge run to make it an 81-64 game with 5:48 to play.

Cougar Downing led Barton with 19 points. The sophomore also handed out eight assists. Thompson scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the Barton bench.

The Cougars will be on the road for the third straight contest Monday night after missing out on the home game with Colby.

A big factor in the game was the 50 free throws the Conquistadors put up, making 37 of them. Four different Cougars fouled out and three technicals were assessed to Barton in the loss.

Barton will head to Garden City to take on the Conquistadors in a 7:30 pm tip. Garden took a 3-game winning streak to Hutchinson Saturday night, standing at 5-5 in the Jayhawk at the time.
