SALINA – It was a couple rounds for the record books.

After scorching the Salina Municipal Golf Course for a 5-under par in the opening round Monday the Barton Community College men’s golf team nearly matched that total on day two. Barton shot a 4-under par Tuesday for a school record 9-under par for the 36-hole event.

The Cougars dominated the event, running away with the Kansas Wesleyan Fall Invitational. Barton ended the two-day event with a 551 over the Par 70 course for a 9-under total. That was 34 strokes better than anyone else.

“The guys played really well,” coach Doug Kaiser said. “We had never even had a team shoot under par in school history so this was really fun to watch.”

“It is a flat course for the most part but they had some pins tucked behind some traps,” he continued. “Putter (Srinoon) and Shawn (Kang) both had three bogeys on Tuesday.”

Bethany College finished second with a 25-over total of 585. Host Kansas Wesleyan and Sterling College each shot 586. Fort Hays State rounded out the top five with a 587.

Leading Barton was the duo of Natchapol Srinoon and Seokhuhn Kang. They were the only two golfers to shoot under par both days and went head-to-head for the medalist honors.

Srinoon used a first day lead to edge Kang for that honor. The sophomore from Thailand opened with a 65 and followed with a 66 to finish 9-under par 131 during the two days. That was good for a school mark as well.

Kang, a freshman from South Korea, opened with a 67 then matched Srinoon with a 66 for his 7-under total of 133.

It was the third career medalist honors for Srinoon.

The duo was five strokes clear of the field. Brian Krehbiel of Bethel College and Lorenzo Bolivar of Sterling tied for third with a 2-under 138.

Jakkapat Horsangchai, a freshman from Thailand, was in the mix for medalist after his first round effort of 68 but he couldn’t keep pace with his Barton teammates on Tuesday, shooting 1-over 71 for a total of 1-under 139 in fifth.

Also earning Top 20 efforts for Barton were sophomores Jared Oelke, Blake Huxman and Jestin Jackson. Huxman and Jackson were playing as individuals.

Oelke, from Ellinwood, posted the fourth score for the Cougars each day with a 75-73—148 for the two days. That put him in a tie for 11th at 8-over par.

Huxman, from WaKeeney, also finished at 8-over and in a tie for 11th with a 74-74-148. Jackson, from Valley Center, was one stroke back with his 73-76—149, tied for 16th.

Goddard freshman Riley Kane finished with an 82-76—158 in 39th. Arkansas City sophomore Andrew Iverson shot 83-82—165 in 49th.

Barton has two more events scheduled for the fall season. The Cougars will play in the Sterling College Invitational Oct. 12-13 at Carey Park in Hutchinson. The slate will conclude with the Barton Invitational Oct. 19 at StoneRidge in Great Bend.
